Hello, my name is Bob Adams, aka Bobthetaxman. I spent 31 years of my life doing taxes for the general public. I was not really into accounting, (still don’t like it), but I had a keen sense about strategies and determining the things that gave the greatest results without getting lost in all the minute details. That perspective was, and still is, the driving force in my life today.
I started my tax career working for a CPA who acquired a practice of 800 clients in the late 1980s. Still doing taxes by hand, but starting to get into the computer arena, he was overwhelmed with the immensity of his client base and trying to figure out the computer at the same time. I had some, (very little), experience with a computer, but didn’t know taxes at all. He asked if I would be willing to assist him by taking over the computer part of his business, so I did. During that first season, I developed a love for creating PRACTICAL approaches to doing returns on the computer and got involved in electronic filing. This led me to expanding my computerized services as a service provider to other accountants still afraid of the computerized tax preparation world. Eventually, (in fact the very next year), the same CPA fired me because I was making more money working as a service provider than I was working for him.
With my new found skills, I determined to begin my own tax preparation service in conjunction with the money I was making servicing these other tax professionals, and opened my doors with a whopping 12 clients my first year. Eventually I bought out several practices and within 20 years built it to 4,000 clients, 3 offices, and 35 employees. (An interesting note, the CPA that fired me eventually became an employee of mine. SMILE.)
What did I do that would interest so many people in trusting me to do their taxes? Especially since I wasn’t a CPA, Enrolled Agent, or anything with initials after my name? I can tell you what it was. . . I WAS PRACTICAL. My office ran very smoothly. I was one of the first test sites for electronic filing in the State of Idaho. The IRS had me speak in district, regional, and national events covering the advantages of electronic filing. I pioneered instant refund loans for my established clients with a local bank. And while all these things were neat and nifty, where I really shined was applying simple tax strategies for small business owners to reduce their tax obligations through legal options made available by our congress and the IRS. I created my own accounting spreadsheets for small business owners with the basic, AND BEST, tax reducing options built into the program.
SO, why would anyone want to listen to, or trust, a guy without all the initials in determining a PRACTICAL approach to taxes, money, and retirement? Perhaps it’s because all the initials and titles are important when the world we live in requires more expertise, but for 90% of us, it doesn’t. Don’t misunderstand me. I am not dissing professionals, in fact I use them for lots of situations that are much more detailed than what I want to deal with, but for most of us, there are some simple and PRACTICAL options that do not require that much detail to accomplish some pretty incredible things and financial gains.
My website is created, and dedicated, to showing you a PRACTICAL understanding of the basics in taxes, investments, and strategies that will reduce, defer, or eliminate potential tax obligations, particularly with windfall gains from investing.
